A Russian Spy Suspect’s Links to the Tech World
By Jennifer Valentino-DeVries
The 12th suspect in the Russian spy-ring case, who was deported by the U.S. on Tuesday, had plenty of ties to the technology world.
Alexey Karetnikov, 23, had worked as an entry-level software tester at Microsoft for less than year, a company spokesman told the Journal. U.S. officials said the suspect entered the country in October 2009. Microsoft would not comment further on the case, but a man by the name of Alexey V Karetnikov lists the software giant as an employer on his Facebook page.
According to the page, Mr. Karetnikov worked in the “software development engineer in test” position at Microsoft. He graduated last year from St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University and previously worked as a senior developer at a company called Neobit, according to the page.
There are plenty of tech companies out there called Neobit, but Bloomberg found one called OOO NeoBIT that is based in St. Petersburg. A translation of that company’s site describes the firm’s activities as as including vulnerability-analysis software and the design of systems for the transmission and protection of sensitive and classified information.
